REACON CARBON CALCULATOR INSTRUCTIONS
Thank you for using the REACON Carbon Calculator! This Calculator was developed to provide users
with a simple and straight forward approach to determining their carbon footprint, reduction/recycling
goals, and the overall environmental impact both from a cost and carbon equivalent basis. The following
tips are organized by category. It is recommended that the user have a copy of at least one month's utility
bill either in the Spring or Fall months to prevent overestimating of either annual heating or cooling usage.
User can move cursor over input tips that are marked by a "?" to obtain more information on input entry or
general assumptions.
Please note: The REACON Carbon Calculator has been developed to provide users with a simplified
carbon footprint model and not intended to provide an exhaustive greenhouse gas inventory. Carbon
equivalents information has been obtained from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
ENERGY
- For each energy type, enter your existing monthly usage, existing monthly cost, and estimated
reduction goal in % from energy efficient equipment, better insulation, enhanced scheduling, etc.
TRANSPORTATION
- For each vehicle type, enter your quantity of cars, fuel efficiency in miles per gallon, average cost
per gallon of fuel, average monthly mileage, and estimated reduction goal in % from carpooling,
vehicle route changes, etc.
WASTE MANAGEMENT/RECYCLING
- For each waste type, enter your existing monthly usage, existing monthly cost, and estimated
reduction or recycling goal in % for cardboard, metals, mixed paper, and plastics. The estimated
reduction or recycling % is based on the total volume of waste.
(For example: if the monthly usage was 10 cubic yards, 10% cardboard would equal 1 cubic yard
of general waste diverted through recycling. At no time, can the total percentages for all 4 items
be greater than 100%.)
PURCHASING
- For the buy local type, enter your existing monthly packages shipped, existing monthly shipping
costs, average distance shipped based on the point of origination, average shipping truck
efficiency in miles per gallon, average cost per gallon of diesel fuel, diversity factor as a
percentage of your package weight to the total truck shipping weight, and estimated reduction
goal in % (From purchasing locally.)
- For the paper type, enter your existing monthly usage, existing monthly costs, and estimated
recycled content of the paper in %.
- For other purchased goods or environmentally friendly practices, determine carbon equivalents in
metric tons based on other websites/calculators and enter existing monthly usage and reduction
goals in %.
(For example: electric vehicles, green cleaning products, and other practices.)
